The short answer
To hang café curtains, choose how much of the window you want covered, position a suitable rod at that height, and measure down to your desired hem. Fit the hardware according to its instructions, then hang panels using their intended rings, hooks or rod pocket. Leave the upper glass open to the light.
Choose the heading before you order. Flat panels need extra width to gather. Made-to-order pleated panels may already include that fullness. The correct order size depends on the seller and construction.

How high should you hang café curtains?
Use the window’s meeting rail, if it has one, as your first visual reference. Around the midpoint is a useful starting point, but your sightline and privacy needs should decide the final position. Tape up a piece of fabric and look at it while standing, sitting and walking past outside.
Illustrations compare placement only; they are not scale drawings or fixed height rules.
For matching windows, align the rods visually where the architecture allows. Above a sink, check that the curtain clears the faucet, moving handles and wet surfaces. Keep fabric away from cooking heat.
02 / MEASURE ONCE THE PLAN IS CLEAR
How to measure for café curtains
First, establish the coverage width.
For an inside mount, measure the opening where the rod will sit and check the hardware’s clearance requirements. For an outside mount, decide how far beyond the glass or trim the rod should extend. Use the span the curtain needs to cover, rather than automatically using the glass width.
Then, establish the finished length.
Decide where the hem should stop. For a neat kitchen window, try just above the sill. Measure from the attachment point specified by the seller to that hem position. Rings and hooks change where the fabric begins, so use the actual hardware or its dimensions.
A flat-panel width example
For an illustrative 30-inch coverage width, a total of 60 inches of flat fabric gives 2× fullness. That could mean two 30-inch-wide flat panels, if that size is offered.
Do not apply this multiplication again to a finished pleated width. Follow the brand’s instructions for the selected heading, overlap and returns.
A length example
If the specified fabric attachment point is 24 inches above the sill and you want a ½-inch clearance, the finished drop is 23½ inches. A different top construction can change the order measurement.
Before placing a custom order, confirm whether the listing is priced per panel or per pair, how width is defined, and whether hooks are included. Pepper Home’s café curtains are sold individually, and its pleated and flat styles use different fullness guidance.

03 / THE LITTLE DETAILS MATTER
Choose a café curtain rod and the right attachments
| Option | Why choose it? | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Tension rod | A possible no-drill approach within a suitable recessed opening. | Width range, load rating, surface grip and the manufacturer’s installation instructions. |
| Mounted café rod | A fixed position with brackets chosen for your window. | Mounting surface, screws or anchors, bracket projection and window operation. |
| Clip rings | A relaxed gathered top on fabric designed to take clips. | Rod diameter, clip grip and the extra drop below the rod. |
| Hooks and rings | A tailored pleated top or ring-top panel. | Compatible hook and ring attachments; one ring for each hook as specified by the curtain maker. |
| Rod pocket | A soft gathered top with the rod hidden within the fabric. | Pocket opening and maximum rod diameter; moving the fabric may be less fluid than with rings. |

Liz Linen Pleated Café Curtains
A tailored solid with a linen-look texture. Despite the collection name, this fabric is a linen/polyester blend; check the selected fabric details.
Shop the piece ↗A compatibility detail worth catching: Pepper Home recommends a rod ⅜ inch or smaller for its café curtain rod pockets. Do not assume a café rod from another brand fits. Its ring-top and pleated constructions attach differently. The products here are options to compare, not a universal kit.
04 / BRING IT TOGETHER
How to hang café curtains, step by step
- Test the height.Mark your preferred line with removable tape. Hold the fabric in place and check the view from both sides of the window.
- Confirm the fit.Check your rod’s width range, panel dimensions, heading and attachment method. Test that the window can still open and close.
- Fit the rod or brackets. For a mounted rod, mark level bracket positions and follow the maker’s fixing instructions for your surface. For a tension rod, follow the specific setup and tightening instructions.
- Attach the curtains.Slide on a rod-pocket panel, attach compatible hooks to rings, or space clips evenly on a suitable flat panel. Put the required rings on the rod before securing any end pieces that prevent them sliding on.
- Level the hems and arrange the folds.Adjust hooks or clips where the construction allows. Distribute the fabric, open and close the curtains, and check the hem clearance.
- Finish according to the care label.Let the fabric settle. Press or steam only if the maker permits it; heat and moisture can alter some fabrics or their finished length.
How to hang café curtains without drilling
A purpose-made tension rod can work when the opening has suitable opposing surfaces and the curtains fall within the rod’s limits. Measure at the actual mounting height, clean and dry the contact surfaces as directed, and test the hold before leaving the curtains in place. Some sets include additional fittings, so check the instructions rather than assuming every tension-style product is completely screw-free.

05 / MAKE IT FEEL LIKE YOUR KITCHEN
Three ways to style café curtains
Let the window introduce one pattern or soften what is already there. Choose fabric in the actual room: cabinetry, daylight and nearby wallpaper all change how a swatch reads.
Green gingham + warm wood
A cheerful check brings character to cream cabinets and wood shelves. Keep nearby kitchen towels simple and repeat the green in one useful piece.
Start with Millie Sage ↗Soft ivory + aged brass
A solid curtain lets a beautiful window, stone counter or patterned floor lead. Choose the heading for the mood: a gathered top feels easy; pleats bring structure.

A fine stripe + painted cabinets
A narrow blue, green or neutral stripe adds rhythm without a large print. Repeat a cabinet color in the fabric and leave a little contrast so the window has definition.
Explore Celia stripes and checks ↗Pattern illustrations suggest palettes; they are not exact fabric swatches.
Prefer a small floral?
A delicate floral adds softness to a kitchen with straight lines and plain cabinetry. Keep the scale different from nearby wallpaper. A sheer weave filters light, but check it at night before relying on it for privacy.

Lucie Chamomile Café Curtain
A delicate sheer floral for a little movement and pattern. Order a swatch to judge the color and transparency in your own window.

THE CAFÉ CURTAIN SOURCEBOOK
Where to shop for café curtains
Start with the fit and finish you need. Custom curtains can solve an unusual window or bring in a particular pattern; a ready-made pair may be the simpler choice when the dimensions work.
| Source | Why we would look here | Before you order |
|---|---|---|
| Pepper Home ↗ | Custom patterns, checks, sheers and heading choices that suit a collected kitchen. | Order swatches; confirm individual-panel pricing, construction and hardware fit. |
| TWOPAGES ↗ | Made-to-order solids, stripes, checks and prints, with several construction options. | Read the selected fabric composition and the width instructions for your heading. |
| Pottery Barn ↗ | The Emery ready-made pair for a quieter linen look. | Match the listed panel dimensions and heading to your window and rod. |
| Everhem ↗ | A custom café-curtain option to explore alongside coordinating hardware. | Use its measuring guidance; confirm your configuration, mounting depth and current lead time. |
| Rejuvenation ↗ | Small-scale rods and rings to finish the window. | This is a hardware source. Check compatibility with whichever curtain brand you choose. |

THE FINISHING CHECK
Small mistakes that change the whole look
Not enough fabric
A flat panel stretched tightly across the glass can look skimpy. Check the seller’s fullness guidance before buying; finished pleated widths are a different calculation.
A hem that catches
Test the faucet, sill and window handle. Leave clearance for normal use rather than choosing length from a photograph alone.
Rings added after measuring
Hardware affects the drop. Finalize it before a custom length order so the fabric lands where you planned.
Assuming sheer means private
Fabric that screens the view by day may reveal silhouettes when the room is lit at night. Test a swatch or sample under those conditions.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Café curtain questions, answered
Do café curtains have to cover exactly half the window?
No. Use the architecture and required privacy to choose the line. A meeting rail can make a natural visual break, but it is a starting point rather than a fixed rule.
Should café curtains touch the windowsill?
For a tidy kitchen window, a small clearance above the sill is often useful. Confirm the final drop with your hardware in place and keep the hem clear of water and moving fittings.
Can you use café curtains with blinds or a shade?
Yes, if there is enough room for both treatments to operate. A separate blind or shade can provide extra coverage when the café curtain alone does not meet your privacy needs.
How many café curtain panels do I need?
One wider panel or a pair can both work. Decide how you want the curtain to open, then use the seller’s sizing guidance for the chosen heading. Check whether the product is sold individually or as a set.
Are café curtains only for kitchens?
No. A breakfast nook, utility room or suitable bathroom window can also benefit from lower-window coverage. Match the fabric care and privacy level to the room.
KEEP COLLECTING
A softer window. A more welcoming kitchen.
Start with a swatch and a measurement, then choose the few pieces that make the window work. The best result feels like part of the room you already love.
